We are looking for an actor for The Hungry Ghost by Mei Leng Yew for a production in London in October. There is the potential for a tour in 2027.
The Hungry Ghost, by Mei Leng Yew, is a comedy-horror-romance inspired by traditional Chinese belief systems surrounding ghosts, ancestral worship and the afterlife. When a young British-Chinese woman ignores superstition and moves in with her girlfriend Naomi at the beginning of the seventh lunar month, she unwittingly allows a ghost to take possession of her body.
Torn between wanting to please her parents, who she hasn’t yet told that she has moved out, and her girlfriend, who thinks she has fully moved in, Girl jumps through hoops to make everything work. Meanwhile Ghost becomes more emboldened and soon decides that aspects of Girl’s life are too dull to bother with. She starts to wreck havoc, becoming a menacing force that threatens Girl’s career and family relationships, and eventually Naomi’s life.
In order to free herself and save Naomi, Girl is forced to give heed to her mother’s superstitious warnings and confront Ghost to set them both free.
The play takes place from the beginning to the end of the seventh lunar month, a period known in Chinese culture as the Hungry Ghost Festival, when the bridge between our world and the underworld opens, allowing the ghosts of our ancestors to return to carry out their unfinished business. The whole month is considered to be very unlucky.

Description: Hungry ghost of a woman from Ancient China who died very young. Now she has experienced Girl’s life with Naomi, she doesn't want to go back to her own world and is threatening to completely take over Girl. Hungry, vigorous, deeply embodied.
Has a Chinese accent. Must be a native Cantonese speaker.
