Now in its eleventh year, the Constellation Creatives Bursary aims to encourage and promote greater participation and representation of British East and South East Asian actors on stage and screen by supporting the pathway from graduating student to professional actor.
It provides: £1,000 towards additional expenses incurred in that transitional period; a FREE Standard Headshot Package provided by David Yiu; two casting workshops with Mixing Networks; as well as a FREE year’s subscription to Spotlight.
The bursary is awarded to a drama school student of East or South East Asian descent who, in the opinion of the judging panel, has best demonstrated at the audition/interview that they have the talent, skills and commitment to succeed as a professional actor.
This year, the panel included: Alastair Coomer (Head of Casting, National Theatre), Matthew Dewsbury (Head of Casting, Royal Shakespeare Company), John Cannon (Head of Casting, BBC), Sarah Leung (Independent Casting Director, CDG, BAFTA) , Orion Lee (Actor and Benefactor), and Kumiko Mendl (Artistic Director, New Earth).
We are so proud to introduce Melanie-Joyce Bermudez as our 2023 Constellation Creatives Bursary winner!
“It was a pleasure to be back in person again and to be able to welcome a new panel member; Casting Director Sarah Leung. Every year I am so impressed at the depth of determination, intelligence and talent shown by BESEA graduates. This year was no exception. Melanie-Joyce Bermudez is a worthy winner and I am certain that her journey into acting to get where she is now, will act as an inspiration for other aspiring BESEA actors.”
Kumiko Mendl, Artistic Director, New Earth Theatre
“The auditions were brilliant and I got to meet incredible new BESEA talent, who are all on my radar now. I felt very honoured to be asked on the panel alongside my amazing peers; and left feeling so inspired, excited and grateful to be a part of New Earth’s wonderful bursary - which isn’t just about showing the East and South East Asian talent we have here in the UK already, but also promoting, supporting and encouraging the next generations to follow.”
Sarah Leung, Casting Director, CDG, BAFTA
“All the applicants for this bursary demonstrate – year on year – the growing abundance of talent in the East Asian and South East Asian acting community. The event is always inspiring, provoking and extremely entertaining. I look forward to it every year and I look forward to what this years’ cohort will achieve on stage and screen in the future.”
Alastair Coomer, Head of Casting at National Theatre
